The SDFC Way
The values and principles that define who we are, how we coach, and why we believe fencing should be accessible to all.
We provide an open, inclusive environment focused on learning how to become the best version of yourself. Although fencing is technically an individual sport on the strip, teamwork is at the absolute core of everything we do.
What Makes SDFC Different
1. Development Over Trophies
We see fencing competitions as a way to test ourselves and keep improving—not as a measure of self-worth. Medals and titles are inspiring milestones, but long-term athletic growth, resilience, and character development are our true goals.
2. Not for the "Elite"
Fencing should never be an exclusive sport reserved only for affluent families. We keep our programs affordable, provide equipment for introductory classes, and work to find solutions so that any passionate athlete can participate and compete.
3. Month-to-Month Family Pledge
If you join SDFC, we consider you family. As such, we will never ask you to sign a long-term annual contract. We operate month-to-month. If your journey takes you elsewhere, just let us know 15 days in advance so we can wish you all the best.
4. The Shared Medal Tradition
Whenever an SDFC fencer wins a tournament medal, they bring it to the club and offer it to their teammates and training partners. Every athlete places a hand on the medal to symbolize their collective contribution to that success.
5. Global Fencing Network
In 2016, SDFC founded the Global Fencing Network—an international alliance connecting more than 200 fencing clubs across 40+ countries. Our fencers and coaches enjoy open doors and training exchanges around the world.
6. Community School Outreach
SDFC works with local schools to introduce students to fencing through demonstrations and introductory workshops, sharing the discipline, athletic fun, and focus of Olympic fencing with young people who might otherwise never have experienced the sport.
No Victory Is Achieved Alone
In sports culture today, an unhealthy emphasis is often placed on individual ego. At SDFC, we teach our athletes that behind every touch, every point, and every medal stands a room full of teammates who pushed them, sweat with them, and held them accountable in practice.
When you hold a medal at SDFC, you hold it for your club. That humility and gratitude helps develop confident, grounded athletes.
Join the SDFC CommunityFounded in 2005. Guided by Fencing Masters.
San Diego Fencing Center was founded in 2005 by Bolivian Olympic fencer Saul Mendoza and his wife Victoria Mendoza to share their passion for the sport with the San Diego community. Saul represented Bolivia in foil and épée at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles and brought dedicated Olympic fencing instruction to North County.
In 2016, Juan Ignacio Calderón joined SDFC as co-owner and Head Coach. A 3-Weapons Fencing Master certified by the Spanish Master Academy and USFCA, Juan is also the Head Coach for the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Varsity Fencing team and an International FIE Referee. Together, they formalized The SDFC Way, ensuring the club remains a home for excellence, inclusivity, and mentorship.
